About
Gary Malcolm
I coach senior leaders while running a business of my own. This page is the short version of why that combination is the point.
Biography
Why my background is relevant
I have lived and worked in Vietnam since 2002 and established my first business here in 2004. I lead a business today, which means I am still making commercial decisions, still accountable for results, and still close to how these organisations actually work.
That matters in a practical way. You do not have to explain your world to me before we can start. And when we discuss a decision, I have made the same kind of decision myself, with the same consequences attached.
How the work developed
I graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and served eleven years as an Australian Army officer across seven countries, leading teams that ranged from small to large. I moved into consulting after that. I began coaching informally in 2001, while working for the United Nations, and established my first business in Vietnam in 2004. I was already leading the business I run today before I completed my first formal coaching qualification in 2011.
Leading, consulting and coaching have run alongside each other rather than one after the other. I have never stopped doing any of them.
Where the work has been
Leaders I have coached have come from organisations including

- Home Depot

- MSD

- Mitsui

The credential
I hold the Master Certified Coach credential from the International Coaching Federation, the highest of its three levels. It is awarded on assessed coaching hours, accredited training and recorded sessions examined against the ICF Core Competencies. It can be verified independently.

I lead a multinational business in Vietnam and coach senior leaders across Vietnam and APAC. I also develop executive coaches toward ICF accreditation.
What working with me is like
Direct, structured and respectful of your time. We contract clearly, we work on what actually matters, and I will tell you the truth as I see it, including when the truth is that you do not need a coach.
Start with a conversation
An introductory conversation is confidential and without obligation. Bring a real situation. You will leave with my honest read on whether coaching is the right approach for it, and whether I am the right coach. I have run businesses; I know the difference between a useful meeting and a sales pitch.
